The Wizard of Oz

I decided last night in the middle of one of E's crying fits that everything we need to know about life we learned in the Wizard of Oz.

Someone's always out to get you. Whether she's a witch on a bike or a witch with a b, someone's out to get you.

We're surrounded by the clueless, the heartless and the weak. Unlike Dorothy, I'm losing my patience with the lot of them.

There is a constant barrage of flying monkies. They're everywhere. They have names like dissertation, weekly report, newsletter, staff meeting, bills, mortgage, laundry...yep, they're all flying monkies.

And wouldn't it be nice just to take a nap in the little poppy field? Forget about it. No time for that when you're running from the flying monkies!

There's always a puppet master. Depends on the day and the situation, but there is a puppet master shrouded in great mystery pulling the strings to screw with me. One day, I'll find him.

And in the end, you wonder - which was better: the real life or the funny little dream world you were living in?

I have had a new appreciation for the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in the last year. The saxophone guy on the corner by our apartment used to play it every night and we could hear him. So, I would sing it to Daniel. I realized, that it is a very melancholy song. As a child, I didn't really make meaning of the words. I just watched the movie annually and was scared to death of the witch and the flying monkeys. In that song, she just wants to get away from her troubles.

Love it. What a great way to look at life. Kind of funny - I always use the Wizard of Oz to describe my job. Anchors = wizard with the big cloudy face. Producers = the man behind the curtain running the show.
